Mineral cosmetics are obviously made out of minerals. So if you intend to make your own mineral makeup, you would expect most of the ingredients to be mineral-based. Formulating your own natural mineral cosmetics will assure you of a 100% hypo-allergenic cosmetic that would give you the same beauty benefits that mineral cosmetic brands promise.

Instructions for Making Homemade Mineral Makeup

(Loose Foundation)
Making mineral makeup foundations are quite simple, as long as you have all the ingredients necessary and the time to do everything carefully and correctly.

Ingredients and Materials

Here are the ingredients that you will need for making homemade loose foundation mineral makeup:

  • Bismuth Oxychloride
  • Essential Oil
  • Jojoba Oil
  • Magnesium Stearate
  • Sericite Mica – Matte Finish
  • Titanium Dioxide (Micronized)
  • Vitamin E Oil
  • Yellow, Brown and Red Iron Oxide Pigments
  • Zinc Oxide
  • cosmetic brush (for application)
  • measuring spoons,
  • Mortar & Pestle
  • Sifter Jars

    • Step-by-Step Instructions

    Phase 1

  • 1 teaspoon of Magnesium Stearate
  • 1/16 teaspoon of Brown Iron Oxide
  • 1/2 – 1 teaspoon of Yellow Iron Oxide
  • 3 teaspoons of Bismuth Oxychloride
  • 4 teaspoons of Zinc Oxide
  • 8 teaspoons of Titanium Dioxide
  • A pinch of Red Iron Oxide

    • Phase 2

  • 1/4 teaspoon Jojoba Oil
  • 4-8 drops of any essential oil
  • 5 drops of Vitamin E Oil

    • Phase 3

  • 1 teaspoon of Sericite Mica with Matte Finish

    • Step 1: Thoroughly mix and blend all the ingredients in Phase 1 through your mortar and pestle. Make sure they mix homogeneously.

    Step 2: Add in the ingredients from Phase 2 one by one on to the Phase 1 mix and stir consistently until everything is homogenous.

    Step 3: Add in the ingredient in Phase 3 and stir all the ingredients using a spoon, while scraping off any mixture that stay on the sides of the bowl.

    Step 4: Add some ingredients or tiny amounts of iron oxide tint to estimate the color that will best fit you. (More details on this on the next paragraph)

    Step 5. Transfer your homemade mineral loose powder into a 30 gram sifter jar so that it can easily applied using your foundation brush.

    Choosing the Right Tint

    It can be quite difficult to determine the tint that blends well with your skin tone. You can change the tint by adding a little more of any of them. If you want a lighter overall shade, you can add in more zinc oxide, titanium dioxide or sericite mica. Make sure you not down all of the additions and of the amounts you have put in so that it will be easier for you to estimate the proportions next time.

    What is important in making your own mineral cosmetics is blending the ingredients all together until they form a homogeneous mixture. All natural mineral make ups can be quite tasking to do, but every minute and every ounce of effort you put into your formulation is well worth it.
